Re: VSA Race Day # 9 - Sat., Sept. 9th

    Friday noontime review:

RASP says it will be good tomorrow, Saturday, race day #9.
Ramy says - "looking great" for Saturday.
Tom Jue reports good flight yesterday... (thanks Tom, nice detail)

Reviewing RASP in a bit of depth, you see:

    • nice Cu clouds, and
    • winds are from south in valley at 5,000 but NE flow at 10,000.
    • Not much surface wind, but
    • winds at BL top are NE /10 to 15 kts, downwind of Blk Butte TP/ Anthony TP.
    • Soundings show a "trof aloft" above the Mendos ( a backing wind).

Thomas D and I will fly in the ASG32, planning on a launch about noon-ish.
    Q. will there be a race?
    A. if enough people show up.

    who knows...

I'll be there! I got a bit of a late reservation for the 23 and probably won't exactly be "racing" but expect to at least be in the air taking advantage of conditions for some of the day.

I'll be flying and will stay for dinner, but probably wouldn't be racing. Rumor has it that my wings grew longer so I'll need to take it easy...

based on lack of interest, I'd say probably no one is racing on a declared task.
    ... not enough racing bodies

I don't plan to stay overnight, so I could skip dinner as well. But maybe just hang out a bit and have chips and sodas.

It is very interesting to look at the panoche rasp:
It looks clear that you need to be no further east than Letts lake for thermals at 1300 hours.
There is Lift west of tree farm - but no lift over cross roads.. at least not above 6,000 ft or so.

pretty low cloud base on this product. But it should be updated tomorrow morning - to be more accurate.

We'll see how it turns out.

    9AM update on Sat morning.
Different picture for today than we had on yesterday's fcst.

Still an early go, but lasting longer.
Sfc wind in valley is north, west side of the Mendos its a west-ish wind

Tow to Tree farm, if cu bases are over 9,000 then head to hull mtn and then on up to Anthony for a good climb , then down to bessa towers and home again.
Wander further west along the route if the cu lure you over there

Yes! another good soaring day at Williams.
    I'm still shooting for a noon-ish launch.

And at 15:25, we still have sixteen gliders in the air.

Re: VSA Race Day # 9 - Sat., Sept. 9th

So I was there at 11:15, just as planned.
Luke and Key were already in the air!

As I started the preflight I saw that Ramy was next to go, with Martin G, Russ, Jim S, Then Mat Man, the Jim-1B all in a line.
Thomas D and I tanked up with fuel and did a self launch. We lifted off at 11:56AM. Another "on time" takeoff, just like the airlines.

Off tow/ power off, at 12:21
Lift and the clouds were precisely as were forecasted by Andy's RASP - thank you Andy.

Landed at 17:02 This was a five hour flight traveling 420 km at a speed of 106 Km/hr

Since this was a race day, we should recognize the winners, in some way ... most distance, fastest speed, etc.
My flight was average, but others had some really good flights. We'll need to wait for them to post to OLC.

The flight for Thomas and me is on OLC at...
    https://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-2....tId=1776882401

So far, with only two ships having posted their flight, the interim winner may be Martin Grant - distance of 460 km and a speed of 118.7 km/hr.
Martin came down from Oregon, just to fly outside of the wild fire smoke that has s inundated his area.

Jury is still out on the unofficial scoring, so we'll wait to see the stats on Key, Jim 1-B, Russ, Jim S., Matt, Ramy and Luke. Like I said, they all had good flights.
If we are doing handicap scoring, we may need to have the flight record for Star as well - flying the ASW23. I heard her leaving Walker at some 8,000 ft - way to go Star!

Nice dinner prepared by Noelle and company, thank you Noelle - and company.

Here's our track - kind of unusual going north near Hull Mountain initially and then going west of Hayfork by five miles, before circumnavigating it by 5 miles. Thomas and I then headed south to Pope Valley before we turned around and headed for home. A real pleasure to fly with Thomas and lots of fun operating that ASG32... just following the clouds...

Re: VSA Race Day # 9 - Sat., Sept. 9th

11:30 PM scores just in from OLC.... We are still missing a few pilots, but here is what we have as of now...

Name .... distance in Km@ Speed in km per hour

    Ramy....... 720@ 102
    Luke ........710@ 110
    Matt ........573@ 92
    Martin ........460@ 119
    Peter.Thomas.. 420@ 106
    Russ ..............414@ 84
    Jim S .............389@ 88
    Pat ...............303/ 88

    Some fantastic flying.
Not sure how to balance distance and speed on a scoring system, and we are not considering handicap of the ship.

Looks like everyone was a winner today

    Distance winner is Ramy
    Speed winner is Martin.
