Just want to say, what a fabulous soaring weekend with flights to the Trinities and as far as Oregon both days. Both days were challenging in the beginning but rewarded those who kept pushing towards the clouds with fantastic cloud streets with 12k+ bases. Lots of gliders and lots of long tows to St John. And great dinner as always. Thanks to the Mayes family for handling the load so well.

Yes, as others have mentioned it was a super weekend of soaring out of WSC. Great turnout, something like 16 private ships, along with lessons and rides.

The cutoff low was around all weekend off the Los Angeles coast. It disappointed as not much moisture was entrained into the area as forecast. Both days started blue with no local cu until around 2.

Saturday I was first off at 11a and it was weak at the meadow west of St John. Just hung in there for 30 minutes at 7800 feet, and after a few more ships showed up moved over to Sheet Iron where it was a little bit better, but then had to head back in. Later that day I flew with Larry Roberts from 3 to 6 p, with cloud starting on Snow and a street going NNW well to the west of the Mendocino ridgeline ending a few miles past Silver Creek. After our first climb on Snow, there was no circling until we were back at Hull, so about 150sm round trip with no circling, and averaging 8-9k heights out & return. It was Larry’s first time back in the air in 18 months, so I was happy to help get him re-acclimated. OLC trace:

The weather for Saturday should have been better than average to start, so the only explanation I have for the slow start is the east breeze pushing the shear line so far west that there was no air mass collision to help lift the poor thermals form better on the Mendos, hence the scratching by many for at least an hour.

The dinner of tri-tip, salad, drink and dessert was fabulous (again). Thanks Noelle, Rex, Ben, Nick, Alma, Angelica, The scene Fri eve:

Sunday dawned with a bit of coolness such that you think, “is it really going to work today?” But we stuck to the forecast, and I was sniffer again, launching a bit before noon with Alex Neigher. About 10 ships were still assembled, including Peter Deane’s new JS-3. I did just like yesterday, and released at St. John @7,500ft, gained a few hundred to 7,800, went over to the meadow, got to 8,000, then to Sheet Iron for a climb to 8,300. The trend was good, each spot better than the last on the way north. Next was a big 5 kt climb at Black Butte, Ramy followed after me, and got a bit stuck at Anthony, but got going again. The clouds started at Yolla Wilderness, and went NW. We were lower and more westerly than I’m use to, way west of the Yolla wilderness, but that’s where the clouds were, and sure enough, we got our first good climb there. From then on, it was mostly under cloud across to Trinity, the Marbles, turning at the peak just SE of Happy Camp at 3p (and with a good climb, which as we know, never happens at the last cloud. Bombed along back to WSC with little circling, because the clouds were so closely spaced, we were @WSC by 5:25, so Happy Camp to WSC in less than 2.5 hours, amazing. Trace:

Alex was a good stick, learning quickly on speed to fly, flaps use, weaving when in lift, and even thermalling the ship a few times. It helps he’s a former paraglider pilot, and meteorology major too….

He’ll post here shortly, both of us got busy since the flight.

So great to see so many ships and pilots!
