    OGN Tracker FLARM Registration

To register your FLARM device for use with the OGN tracker:

The registration requires the FLARM ID of your FLARM device.

Option 1. I understand from Noelle that the FLARM ID is noted on a placard on the FLARM device.

Opeion 2. Noelle also noted that the FLARM ID is contained in each IGC log file downloaded from your FLARM device for an individual flight.

My FLARM ID A0798F is located about 20 lines from the top of the IGC file as follows:

    LFLA193642ID 1 A0798F

Since the received data is only FLARM, pilots need to associate their FLARM ID (typically the same as their 'Mode S' ID) with their registration/contest numbers in the OGN database here: https://ddb.glidernet.org. This allows trackers and whatnot to display the contest/registration numbers.

Just a small correction, the flarm ID is your ‘Mode-S’ ID, which you put in your flarm config file. I don’t think it is the same ID you may find on your flarm placard. You aircraft has mode S ID even if you don’t have a mode S transponder.

All you need to do is put your FLARM ID in the Open Glider Network database: https://ddb.glidernet.org. It will take you less than 60 seconds. If you don’t know the ID, you can look it up (it should be the ‘Mode-S’ ID) on https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/.

Ramy, Thanks for that correction and the FAA Registry link. I did not look for the placard on my FLARM, so I can't testify on what it contains.

The link to the FAA registry provided by Ramy https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/ is the easiest way to find your FLARM ID (Mode-S ID), however there are two Mode-S Code values given. The value that worked to get my FLARM registered is "A0798F".

Here are the entries in the FAA Registry for my glider.

    Mode S Code (base 8 / oct) 50074617

    Mode S Code (base 16 / hex) A0798F

    Re: OGN Tracker FLARM Registration

Before Russ posted the above, I went to the registry and looked up his glider.

Here is a screen shot of the right hand side of the displayed registration

If you are trying to get a handle on this subject, you must know your FLARM ID.

Go to FAA Registry - https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/
Look up your glider in the registry
on the registration page you will see "Mode S Code (base 16 / hex)" - make a note of that code.

Other questions that others may have:

    • what is a config file
    • what do you type into the config file
    • how do you install a config file
    • how to get your contest ID to display on the screen of other people's tracking devices

    Re: OGN Tracker FLARM Registration

To be clear, your flarm id is what you enter into your flarm yourself in your flarm config file- and should be your mode S code as noted. it is not a property of the flarm hardware. OGN and flarmnet both work by associating the mode S code you enter in your flarm with your contest ID.

So your config file radio id and your OGN or flarmnet entries must be consistent for this to work.

Ironically I was just trying to figure out college registration steps with my son who is going to college next year. If anyone thinks that flarm configuration and registration is complicated, you are welcome to help my son with his college registration process, and I’ll take care of your flarm

    Re: OGN Tracker FLARM Registration

It's safe to say that all of the above postings on the subject of FLARM are appreciated by all pilots. A big thanks to Russ, Key, Ramy, Peter D, Dan, Noelle and particularly Phillip. As an arm chair pilot, I will enjoy watching the flights, once all the players begin transmitting their valid identifications.

I googled the "flarm config file" and re-discovered the excellent PDF that Paul Remde (cumulus-soaring.com) has posted. It seems to be quite self-explanatory and self-contained.
Considering the importance of this valuable equipment we call flarm, it would seem every pilot would/ should take the time to read through Paul's text file, and do what it takes to get your flarm up to date. Granted, computers and keyboards and the associated concentration create frustrations, but it's an investment that must be made.

See the file on this link for PowerFLARM Tips....

    https://www.cumulus-soaring.com/flar...FLARM-Tips.pdf

Get yourself a USB flash drive sit down and proceed. Spend the 20 minutes concentrating and it'll be done.
A couple of lines from Paul's instructions...
    - If you have correctly completed the data entry above, a dialog will appear allowing you to select where you want the file to be saved on your computer. The most common reason for errors is neglecting to set “Audio out” to “Off”.
    -
I recommend saving the “FLARMCFG.TXT file directly to the USB flash drive (PowerFLARM Core) or microSD card (PowerFLARM Portable) that you will be using to load it into the PowerFLARM

    Re: OGN Tracker FLARM Registration

Besides completing my BFR and getting some flight time in, Noelle pointed out that our Flarm was not labeled correctly. So I just spent yesterday updating firmware, properly labeling, and registering with Glidernet based on the instructions above. All seem straightforward, let's see how it looks on the next flight.

    Friendly reminder

Have you updated your Flarm firmware to current version 7.03?

    https://flarm.com/support/firmware-u...load-firmware/

    and

Check to make sure you are registered on the FlarmNet and OGN so other pilots can see your CORRECT contest ID on their displays as well as the WSC Office.
