    Thursday May 9 thermal alert

A couple pilots have asked about Thursday. Another cutoff low is forecast over Southern California, plus it’s bringing in extra moisture:

Those two factors drive this super valley day. Cut off lows are the best, they make for unusually good conditions. I wish we had this much moisture last weekend, it would have made a huge difference. There may also be wave over the Mendocino‘s but that may be too much (but just know it's possible in the morning).

I'll not be flying, but everyone who does fly, report!

Thursday looks even better on this morning's rasp -- and very interesting. Some notable features: cu through the northern part of the valley, and on the sierra foothills. This looks like a day for around the top and return via sierra. Also, however, the mendocino convergence line is incredibly far west. This looks like an interesting day to explore far western parts of the mendocinos that we never get to (or, I've never gotten to), though it may require a death-dive to gravelly valley to get started. I'm really interested to hear other views of the weather and possible tasks.

Take a look at the May 7 Twitter post from Daniel Swain which has a cool GIF of the "retrograde" back side slider cut off low: https://twitter.com/Weather_West/sta...57608651485184
