Post Frontal (about flying on Friday, 8 March, 2013)

That post by Ginny and Ramy got my juices flowing (about flying on Sunday (last Sunday)).

It's March and spring soaring is about here.
As I write this, it is 9 AM on Wednesday and it sunny, but chilly, here in Vacaville.
This might be classified as a "late winter storm", rather than spring showers.
We did have a frontal passage, and the air mass has changed demonstrably.

In any case, it all begs the question... will we see some good soaring opportunities on Friday through Sunday this coming weekend?

    It's all very changeable - that's a given.

I plan to fly on Friday if the BLIP and RASP support that plan.
I'll probably have to wait until Thursday night to say for sure, and even then, the outlook could change drastically by the next morning.

We have north winds in the forecast, so we'll have to balance that with glider assembly and takeoff capability - as well as B/S ratios. The lower air mass (surface to 10 K) should be unstable - at least for a few days, but that wind is definitely the limiting factor.

I'll be there Friday if it does not get too windy.

Update as of Thurs 10 AM

Looking at BLIP and RASP for tomorrow it looks very promising.

    actually...
it ought to be a boomer.

    Shame Ginny can't make it.

It's certainly turning out to be THE day to fly - according to the current outlook.

Probably one of those days that we turn Bessa Dam, or Vaca Pond, then Mt St Helena, etc..

It'll be great to see the others ships in the air - on the flarm.

TG may join the party. Will decide in the morning.
It may get OD to the north but looks promising for a run south and SW.

Update: Friday morning - 7 AM

TV pictures tells me the wx.
    Ch 10, ch 3, ch 13
Darla G on 10 - disappointing to watch - so much better when Altera has the shift. He puts good effort into his graphics and speaks clearly and concisely about the atmosphere and what we should expect and why we should expect it.
The new ( started last fall) blonde on ch 3 is nice to look at, but she stands in front of the map so I can't see our flying area as the "future cast" spins through the day.

Looks like we should launch before noon.
On future cast I saw clouds forming over yolla peak, by mid afternoon - it'll be a heavy rain cell NW of Willows about a 20 mile radius circle around paskenta, with Williams staying in the clear.
Clouds forming over capay valley - leading to rain in late ( as in 5PM) afternoon, but going away after sunset.

Generally clear - sat photo looks clear - overhead our flight path.

Tow W towards charters, go around pope valley and get back to Williams by way of hwy 20 path, hope rain doesn't block the return.

if valley pops up, maybe it'll be better to fly south a bit and then as far north as time allows for a daylight return to Williams from chico area.

winds are NW 5 to 15 kts

gotta consider there could be stronger winds more from the north in the afternoon.

just watched the video on the computer.
    http://www.kcra.com/weather/video

Same good looking blue stripped outfit, still has her body blocking the screen

it's the same thin I saw on tv at 6 30 am.
that cell over paskenta develops at 2:30 pm.
Could be light rain in the cloudy bit between esparto and winters between 4 pm and 7 pm
