This Contest was probably the most enjoyable of any glider contest I have attended. Thank you Rex and Noelle for organizing, sponsoring, and operating the event.

Congrats to the winners. Well flown by all.

I have posted to the SSA web site about my experiences with Flarm at the contest. You may read the same posting on the VSA Flarm page. See:

Peter, you should share your observations on region 11 yahoo group and of course RAS to significantly increase the audience for your feedback. Will be nice if it comes directly from you but please let me know if you prefer I will post on your behalf.

I agree that the initial posting to the SSA site will get very limited viewing, as will the posting to the VSA site.
I think the best thing is to have as many pilots talking about the effectiveness of Flarm as is possible.

Having you post that report would probably be the most helpful and have the best effect.

If you think it would be more effective, just cut and paste the report into the RAS or into the Hollister and Truckee forums.

Feel free to copy and distribute any and all of my posting.

    Thanks Ramy,
    Peter Kelly

Here area a few impressive graphics that illustrate the gaggles we were all a part of on Day 4....

This first set is at 14:44. Red arc is the five mile start circle. There are 18 gliders in this one thermal, all within 600 feet of the same altitude

This second set is exactly two minutes later, as everyone in the herd starts the race within seconds of each other....

Precisely 15 minutes later, at 14:59 the gaggle is still together and moving towards the first turn point....
Note the scale legend at the bottom of the map....

That evening, and on the next day, there were several discussions about the gaggle flying. Peter Deane - 2T addressed the dilemma most effectively in his talk that following morning, citing the lack of pilot leadership in the thermal was caused by the lack of a core structure to the thermals. Thermals were weak, and bubbly - lacking a single strong core. Thus it was difficult to follow a leader in the thermal, since there was no leader.

Yes, it was quite an experience.

This was a great contest due to all the work by Rex, Noelle, Ben, and Nick and the few contestant crews that were there. Not everybody realizes the enormous effort it takes to put on a contest. Hats off!!! And thanks to Peter for his flarm reporting.
