    Weekend Soaring March 11, 12 and 13

We can look closer at it when the BLIPMap comes out, but for right now, 1B and PK are using the calendar model and are planning to fly on Friday the 11th.

I'll post here (on this thread) what it looks like as we get closer and will post here as to what we find when we do fly.

    Ah ha!

If Sergio is thinking about coming out, then this calls for a closer inspection - or at least SOME inspection of the wx forecast models - other than the calendar.

pause - looking at wx models....

Yes, I can see how one might consider Friday to be the best of those three days. Friday looks to be pre-frontal to some degree, but let's look at it again tomorrow at mid-morning.

That low pressure north of Vancouver and the undulating jet stream over the northwest USA all make things a bit difficult to predict at this point.
The trof south of that low is very variable.

    More tomorrow.

At 9 PM on Wednesday I am looking at RASP for tomorrow - thursday
Easy wave day up to 18,000 and into the wave window if you want to.
That Vert velocity of 300 cm per second equates to 600 feet per minute!
Besides - you could run north-south and put in a few hundred km of running the lee side of the Mendos- stay below FL 180 when not in teh window.

Surface wind at WSC is fcst to be above 10 from the west by 5 pm, so watch for that.

    Thursday night
The RASP looks good for flying tomorrow - Friday.
Jim-1B and I-PK will both be there.

The BLIP Map seems to be favoring Friday as the best of the next three days, but that can always change.
Pressure gradient is high on Saturday (wind), and Cu bases are lower both days compared to Friday.

Thanks for the weather review, PK.

Calendar model looks like Saturday will be the best day for me.
I'll take a tow on Saturday.

I'll look forward to any flight reports from today (calendar model says I'm working today, Friday)
    Have fun!

    Big crowd for a friday.
We all waited for the cirrus to thin out - and started to launchabout 12:30

Sergio went first. then Dan-4S, then me.
I towed to 1500 ft south east of Charters, planning to practice using the engine.
    Never used it all day!

    We all had good flights
After the first three launches then...
Matt, Jim-1B, Dan Foster, Marianne, others?

    Lots of good flying.

My flight log and a graphic are attached
    156 km using "optimize".

Quite worse than the day before, the morning forecast was for 300 fpm to 5,000/6,000 ft. Instead I went to 9,000' and found 8 knots in the averager! This shows what many people say, including myself: go to fly first, complain about the weather later - most times you will not have complaints at all.

The most challenging part was to reach Goat Mountain, with few weak clouds and not all of them working. At Goat I found the 8 knots, climbing in front of the clouds. This was the beauty of the day, I would find lift in clear air or in very tenuous whispers, and before condensation would begin to form I would fly ahead. I was above cloud base for good part of the flight. I got to 9,000' at Yolla Bolly, then came back same way. Coming back, the clouds had shifted to the west. A regenerating flight. Trace in the OLC.
