Sunday. Note the predicted OD right at South Lake Tahoe. For WSC, Saturday looks slightly better due to the Fri passage of the cutoff low:

    Friday 500mb.

and the heating looks good, slightly better for Saturday, in contrast to the usual post-frontal passage behavior.

Same here! Will be ready to launch at 11:30 or as soon as Kemp think it is time.

In all cases note how westerly the lift line is. Take away: be on final glide from Yolla by 5:30p at the latest.

For the morning, a few minutes will make the difference between a good climb and scratching down low. So, now I'm guessing a 11:15a launch time. Ugh, I despise going over the ridge early in the day.

    Ramy, you go first!

Or better yet, Luke & Ramy on double tow, right before/after FNX. The more the better at once!

The smoke is directly aimed at WSC, but ends to the north. I believe it will retreat tomorrow per both the wind forecast and local on-shore breeze. It won't be gone entirely, but it will be hazy in the morning.

Well, another day of learning! Or… we really worked for our drink today..

Saturday, the smoke was much lighter by mid-morning, but still the heaviest I'd seen in many years. The King fire, the big one E of Sacramento, had smoke flow to the west due to the low off the SoCal coast. By mid-morning the smoke flow was more NW:

Morteza Ansari of the NCSA club is in the front seat. He's (rightfully) more skeptical than I, but we launch at 11:30a with Ramy & Luke shortly behind. Towing through 5,500 ft. we enter a smoke layer that was near IFR. Released at Stonyford, and glided to St. John. No workable lift, so we return to WSC. Hmmm, this smoke REALLY is cutting down on sunlight. Ramy & Luke are now struggling on St. John & Goat respectively.

We relight immediately with the semi-expectation that the heating will be sufficient by the time we get to the ridge. Launch #2 is at 12:45p. On tow we discuss the plan and decide to go to Snow with the hope that the broad top, which normally is a tough area to work, instead becomes an elevated "island" that might be above the smoke layer. "Breaking out on top", we see the air above Snow is much clearer, so release at 8K and glide towards the top, where we get a 3 knot climb to 9,500 ft. Tracking north, along a line parallel to the ridge line but a couple miles west due to the RASP forecast, we climb a few hundred feet every few miles, right over bare areas on the east/west ridges that slope up to the main ridge line. One climb just W of Sheet Iron, another a few miles further, then a better climb at the burn area on the peak S of Black Butte.

We can see cu by this time well W of Yolla, so are optimistic. We get more aggressive to connect to the clouds, and finally are at base, about 12K or so. Looking NW from T15, the street is building:

Bouncing along the cu, conditions continue to get better and we decide to stick with the clouds. Our track takes us to just NE of Hoopa, way west and only 25 miles from the Pacific. Bases are even higher with a peak of almost 14K. Morteza celebrates by doing a selfie with his GoPro stick:

By this time it's 3:30 so we head straight E to the N end of the Trinitys to connect with the clouds on the W side. The view SSW from the S end of the Trinitys:

Ramy is now well W on the same street in the pic above so we coordinate to meet up near Hayfork. We run the same street back to T15:

You can see in the distance it gets much smokier. Tracking along the ridge line we get one last climb off the gully on Black Butte's S side for a 34:1 glide back to WSC. Ramy makes it back about 30 minutes later. *Whew!!* We are glad to make it back.

A dinner at Cairo's tops off a great day.

As the saying goes, "It was a great day, just not at all the day I was expecting!"
