Pat, time for you to do more "field" research!

Sunday, Oct 26 looks good as a post frontal valley thermal day.

Sprinkles Tue eve, then quiet until next weekend. Possible spot wave Nov 1-2.

    I love this stuff!

Kempton, I agree with Ginny. Thanks for bringing these opportunities to our attention!

I ruled out today, yesterday, as a potential field research day. Too disorganized at the 850mb level and too marginal at the 700mb level. But Saturday looks pretty good! My biggest concern is that the surface winds may be too southerly, followed closely by the threat of rain. Will keep an eye on tonight's and tomorrow morning's RASP runs and NWS forecasts.

Saturday is looking very much like my wave flight of last week, so don't let the southerly bias you.

Of anyone, you need to do the Diamonds in the Valley task!

What about rain? From what I can tell it could be a wet wave.

    Kempton,

I'm not so concerned about the southerly wind affecting the overall quality of the day. I think it's going to be a great wave day based on the RASP predictions. My concern was more from a launching standpoint. Definitely a RWY 16 day. Here's the latest from the NWS.

Note that those winds are in knots! And then there's also that pesky precipitation to contend with!

I, like Pete, am very intrigued by the Diamonds in the Valley task. But don't I need to get my C, Bronze, Silver, and Gold Badges first? Or can you just jump right to diamonds?

    Ramy,
Yes, possibly a bit wet in spots, but the Fri morning RASP & GFS favor a low precip risk:

BUT the precip chances goes up as the day goes on. PLAN TO LAUNCH EARLY, as it looks near ideal for a well marked Valley Diamond gain day. Launch definitely before noon. Note the 11a wave forecast:

and how the wave bar is a couple miles SW of WSC, so my post of Diamonds in the Valley plan is what to do. And the lift goes to 18K:

As Pat notes, it will be a South launch, so allow for extra time for that as I'd guess that all ships would need to be at the north end so we don't risk collisions. Check with Noelle on procedures. I'll not be flying, so pls report!

Pat ~ You can go directly to chasing your diamonds. If you get a Diamond altitude and fill out the paper work correctly for the lower badges, you can get them in the same flight.

Sunday is looking like a good day for post-frontal thermals. I will likely fly Sunday.

Re: Wave, wave, thermal (Oct 23-26)

After a late start on Sunday, I had a fine local flight. There was plenty of lift with cloud markers. Due to a problem with my computer (operator problem) I could not post the flight. Noelle towed me to Walker ridge, where there was 1-2 kt lift and I climbed to about 7,500 MSL, then flew across Indian Valley Reservoir to the ridge west of Walker, with light lift, flying straight up the goat ridge. Although the wind was north on the ground (about 15 mph), it was from the west at 4-5 kts once we climbed through 5,000 MSL.
It was a pretty flight - the hills are greening up, and the streams are flowing in Bear Valley, shining gold in the late afternoon sun. Heading back to WSC from the Cortina Ridge, I found mild lift over I-5 that was sustainable.
I know Sergio and Luke flew earlier in the day - any comments on the flights?
