    Farm air fields for landout

During the tow out for my flight Sunday 10/25/2015 over Cooks the tow pilot (Noelle) mentioned that Cooks was unusable due to hay bales. I glanced out to confirm that the northern 1/3 of the landing strip was in fact covered with those large hay bales rendering it not safe for a glider landing! This is the first time in many tows over this area that I actually looked at Cooks to verify that it is clear of obstructions and ready to land on. What a wake up call, ever since my only landout at Cooks last May I have considered it a good backup if I find myself too low again. It would be easy to include Cooks and Charter in my scan during a typical tow and I vow to do this in the future.

This is a reminder that any farm air strip could be used for anything the owner chooses and make it not safe for a glider to use.

A lesson learned without damaging anything or getting hurt!
