New WSC Wave Window LOA Approved by the FAA

    Everyone,

The new WSC Wave Window LOA has been approved by the FAA and it was signed on January 26, 2016. The new LOA is effective as of February 22, 2016. As a reminder, the new wave windows will now be as depicted on the following sectional map:

The latitude and longitude, and geographic reference (if applicable), of the points which define the boundaries of the windows on the sectional map above are:

    Pt 1 - 39 51 N 122 58 W - Anthony Peak
    Pt 2 - 39 51 N 122 32 W
    Pt 3 - 39 19 N 122 20 W - Sites
    Pt 4 - 38 52 N 122 04 W
    Pt 5 - 38 52 N 122 26 W - Gold Mines
    Pt 6 - 39 16 N 122 43 W - Goat Mountain

The north window is Pt 1, Pt 2, Pt 3, Pt 6, point of beginning. The south window is Pt 6, Pt 3, Pt 4, Pt 5, point of beginning.

Updates reflecting this change will be posted to the VSA and WSC websites.

Thanks again to everyone who helped with this project!

Congratulations Pat. I know how much time and effort you put into this project and it must feel satisfying to have it finally pay off. Your work is a benefit to all who fly out of Williams since the new wave window now depicts the geographical area where wave is likely to occur much more accurately than the previous version. Thank you for all your effort.

Pat, that is great news. Hard work and persistence paid off, and now we all can enjoy your hard work. Thanks and I hope to be one of those pilots to enjoy the new wave window.

Re: New WSC Wave Window LOA Approved by the FAA

I am working on data to update the Williams Soaring Center web site page for the WAVE WINDOW. I really think we need to say THANK YOU to Pat Alford for the new Wave Window. Look at the attached map image and you can COMPARE the two areas. The new WAVE agreement gives us a much larger area to fly in. I have been in wave above and just East of Alder Springs in the past. Now we can make use of the altitude.
REMEMBER: ONLY Williams Soaring Center office staff can open the wave window by telephone call to Oakland Center

By the Way, the new wave windows is NOT effective until Feb. 22, 2016

Meanwhile here is a comparison map. Pink boundaries = New Wave area. Blue boundaries = Old Wave area.

Re: New WSC Wave Window LOA Approved by the FAA - Web Page Updated

The Williams Soaring Center website Wave information page has been updated.

Thanks to Peter Kelly (PK) who provided most of the information so we could bring the Wave information page up-to-date. We could not provide all the navigation, pilot skills, and safety information that is really required to fly in Wave conditions. We did our best to hit the highlights, and did provide the details of the new agreement that Pat Alford and others worked on.

The new Williams Glider Area North and South is much larger and encompasses a new area north of Snow that will provide many opportunities in the future.

    Web page: http://www.williamssoaring.com/pilot-info-wave.html

The web page has a new Wave Window SUA file that you can download and install in your moving map system.

This map, annotated by PK, shows the expected primary wave window under normal wave conditions (if there is such thing as Normal for Mother Nature).

If you have questions about flying in Wave conditions and need to learn more, please check in at the WSC Office and book some time with Charlie Hayes.

There are also many books available on this subject. Some of them are very descriptive and will make you wonder if you really want to fly in wave conditions.

    Enjoy, fly safe.
Again, thanks to PK for his invaluable input.
