Thanks Pat Alford for getting Key on the list of speakers.

I wrote a few words about Key on an adjacent thread ( I didn't want it to get buried here in this announcement bulletin).

    Re: VSA Winter Seminar # 2 - February 18, 2017

I've been watching the weather models for the weekend of this seminar - Feb 18th.
I'm on the schedule to fly on the 18th.
Very changeable this time of year (THAT'S a bit of an understatement)

I looked at the 16 day fcst models at http://www.ggweather.com/loops/ncep_loops.htm

I focused on the 700 mb (10,000 ft) and the 500 mb (18,000 ft) charts (500 mb is mid-level of the atmosphere).

The 10k and 18 k charts, 16 days out indicated: west winds at 30 kts and no moisture at 10 k and 65 kts overhead at FL180. Might be a good day. no rain. wind not a factor.

But now a few days later, the 13 day charts for the 18th of Feb say:

A tight wet low coming in off the coast at 10k. And, the FL180 chart shows a tight low pressure that appears nice and clean, not a lot of zig zag pressure lines in and out, etc, low moving west to east..
Might be Rainy, and whatever. Notice the low at 10,000 is a hundred miles or more to the nw of the low that is 8,000 ft above it. A pretty good slant in the atmosphere. You need to visualize the atmosphere as a three dimensional model. I'd expect to see the "forecast position" of that low to appear more to the south south east of where it is now - just because that slant is so significant - of course it might just be the forecasted times that are off. We'll see in a few days where those two lows are fcst to be on the 18th.

In any case, look again in a few days and you will see it will be vastly different.
Review the 300 mb (30,000 ft) also and you can see the various disturbances aloft, steering these low pressures, etc.

The point of this exercise is to show...

the atmosphere is in a state of flux, it just might be a good flying opportunity. We are going to be there on the 18th in any case, but if it is a good flying day, all the better. I have more fun when I anticipate and think ahead about the flight that might happen.

So, I watch the charts well in advance.
Do it yourself, with a bit of practice, you will find it takes only a few minutes a day to give those two charts a quick look.

    Re: VSA Winter Seminar # 2 - February 18, 2017

Looks like Ginny is very busy this next weekend, and I have volunteered to be one of the helpers.
I've conferred with Noelle and think I know what I need to know to help out.
l'll be buying the food Saturday AM and delivering it to the kitchen.
Cheese, Salami and Crackers for appetizers, Lasagna, green salad (spring mix) with tomatoes, Lots of rolls, and then desert.
    It should be scrumptious.

I just gave the RASP a quick look...
winds not a factor. lots of moisture. but we have trof aloft - and at low levels we have a closed low.
Cloud base at 3,000 in the valley, Mendos in the clouds.
Looks unstable enough for some flying, but this is Thursday.
36 hr fcst on the GFS shows the model for 4 am Saturday.
    It looks hopeful.
I plan to be there in any case, but I am expecting to get some time in the air.

Was just looking at the RASPs as well. I plan to fly the 23 between 11A and 1P. Looking forward to seeing what conditions are like!

    VSA Winter Seminar # 2 - February 18, 2017 - Photos

Many thanks to Key Dismukes for his most helpful presentation. It made a lot of sense and gave me much optimism as I continue my soaring endeavors.

Below are pics I took. I also including three Videos:

    1. Anna Buettner launching in Putt Putt. Opsss, I mean Gilder NM :-).

    2. A 60 second video of a cloud forming right before our eyes as we were enjoying our wine.

    3. Star turning glider around.

Many thanks to Ginny, Rex, Noelle, Cora, Peter Kelly and Pat Alford for putting this dinner even together.

Please note, this link allows you to download these photos and videos. I did downsize all the pics. Some of the pics were fuzzy. I am using a new camera.

I just had to quote you here Tom. You said it all, and the photos and videos are superlative. Thanks for sharing all of this. You photo skills are amazing. You summed it all up very nicely. Love that 60 second clip on the cu forming over the runway.

Key's presentation was very helpful to everyone.

I wonder... Kempton - do we now have a video record of that presentation on file somewhere? It is certainly helpful for all glider pilots everywhere.
What a treat it was to hear the talk and to be at the gliderport - for everyone who could make it.

The flying was really good. It was an easy day to log over 4 hours if you wanted to.
I had the opportunity to fly with Rex in the ASG32Mi. We launched late and landed early, but it was really good.

Flight report (that had been posted here) has been moved to the proper thread.
