although fcst looks good for Friday, the fcst for "race day" may improve.
I may or may not be there, so don't count on me.

John C, maybe you can post your proposed task on Friday night? So pilots can think about it overnight?... or is Rex going to call the task, since it is a Doc Mayes Trophy day?

It looks to me like a really nice day. One good sign is this morning's RASP is noticeably drier than last night -- where there were temperature and dew point glued together for a thousand feet or so now they barely touch. It looks nicely soarable in the valley, with 6,000' or so cu, and nicely soarable in the mountains with 8-10k. The big question is cloud cover in the mountains. There isn't a deep layer of temp touching dew point, and it is capped above so no vertical overdevelopment. But it might get a bit spread out. On our last task, clouds running in to mountains was a constraint on going north. So, we should keep in mind a big mountain oriented task and a smaller (more turnpoints) foothill and valley oriented task, with multiple smaller turn areas, or even (dare I say it?) a MAT, and keep watching how much clouds there will be over the mountain. I hope Rex will want to call the task!

Still looking really good. It starts early. Look at the 10 PST = 11 PDT soundings -- it's already cooking. The one possible negative is signs of clouds shadowing the ground E of Yolla peak late in the day. Look at the progression of thermal updraft and the hole in the up/down motion. More detail later

    Re: May 13th - Doc Mayes Contest/Dinner

It turned out to be a really nice day, followed by an even better dinner. Thanks everyone!

As for flying, it did start early and low -- I was able to climb up from 3,000' at three sisters, and had wimpily passed a glider thermaling at 2,500' somewhat short of that. Dust devils at the airport are an unusual sight. The forecast spreadout on the east side of the mendocinos did happen. The west side of the convergence just west of the tendrils was, as usual, the hot spot, with some struggles for those that got washed east of that line. A little slowdown crossing the clear lake washout going south made it a bit interesting, but the west side of beryessa had regular 4-5 knot thermals as well. A surprising amount of sink in the valley is a good reminder to put some extra on final glides. All together a great day, very pretty, and just enough challenge to keep it interesting.
